Monato (“Month”) is the foremost monthly Esperanto magazine. The newsmagazine acts as a Time or Newsweek for the entire world. Its writers and editors hail from and write about events all over the world, giving it a much broader scope and point of view than most such magazines.
I am an Esperantist and fan of the ideas behind Monato, but I felt not enough attention had been paid to the design of the magazine. I decided to redesign an entire issue, both because I thought it would be fun, and to give possible design ideas to the editors.
Because Monato is not found on many newsstands, it was not necessary to keep the generic masthead layout of most other magazines. Instead, the layout is focused on a photo for the cover story, something to catch the subscriber's eye when the magazine is removed from an envelope. All of the textual information is moved to a sidebar running down the left edge of the page, so that it does not obscure and take focus away from the photo, but instead complements it. Attentive typography makes the cover elegant and informative.
